Sun, August 3, 2008 | Sun, August 10, 2008 | Sun, August 17, 2008 | Sun, August 24, 2008
Concerts start at 3:00 p.m. at the "Emperor William Memorial Church"
The Orchestra
The Berlin Residence Orchestra, which has made a name for itself with its concert series at the Grand Orangery of Charlottenburg Palace, will interpret masterpieces of the Baroque and classical eras under the artistic direction of Sebastian Hotze. Expect unmatched passion and majestic sound. The combination of instruments including a string quintet, flute, oboe and cembalo and two vocalists will provide first-class musical entertainment, complemented by unique acoustics and the enchanting ambience of the Emperor William Memorial Church.
The Program
The program includes an exclusive selection of musical highlights by outstanding composers of the late Baroque and classical periods. Look forward to works by composers such as G.P. Teleman, G.F. Haendel and J.S. Bach, complemented to perfection by pieces written by A. Marcello and Frederick the Great.
The Church
The Emperor William Memorial Church was consecrated on September 1, 1895. It was not only conceived as a church, but also as a memorial to honor Emperor William I.
The original Emperor William Memorial Church was designed by Franz Schwechten, a building surveyor, who was also in charge of the construction of the Anhalter train station, a building of Romanesque Revival style with gothic elements. Renowned artists created mosaics, reliefs and sculptures. For the then new Western Berlin, the church turned into a primary focal point and was regarded, despite some criticism, as an outstanding and famous work of architecture.
