“In Sophie Charlotte’s Footsteps” Guided tour of the baroque Palace garden, dinner and concert
The Charlottenburg Palace Garden, 55 hectares wide, is Berlin’s most outstanding historical garden monument. Its composition surrounding the summer castle of the Brandenburgian Electress and later first Queen of Prussia, Sophie Charlotte, was started in 1697. The garden was designed by Siméon Godeau, a disciple of the famous French landscape gardener André Le Nôtre, thus being the first garden in Germany formed according to Le Nôtre’s style.
Special lines of sight starting from the Palace were characteristic of the Charlottenburg baroque garden. So, the visitor was offered splendid views on the estates of the royal house of Hohenzollern in Spandau, Oranienburg and Schönhausen, as well as on the ground floor of the garden, abundantly decorated with ornamented box trees, and on the system of lime tree alleys which included the carp pond to the North. This baroque garden existed until 1786. At the end of the 18th century, it was remodelled into an English style landscape garden full of atmosphere. The first concepts were designed by Johann August Eyserbeck and Georg Johann Steiner, from 1818 Peter Joseph Lenné took over. Yet, a part of the baroque alley system was conserved.
In 1788, the Belvedere was built in the Northern part of the garden, followed by the Mausoleum for Prussia’s most famous Queen, Luise, in 1810. In 1824, the New Pavilion was built near the Spree River for King Frederick William III. The baroque ground floor, which was destroyed during World War II, has since then been reconstructed in the style of the original composition by Godeau.
